OPEN DOOR ANIMAL SHELTER

Because Open Door is a no-kill animal shelter, we do not euthanize animals because they have behavioral or health challenges that may make them harder to adopt.   Therefore, we have some residents who are “long timers” whose particular situations or challenges make finding the right home for them more difficult.  Here are three of our longer timers.  We know the right home is out there and we appreciate Welsch for helping us get the word out about these wonderful dogs!

Gunner is a long timer who is particularly attached to a few of our staff but some of the others he’s not too fond of (mostly the males around here). While he has a big, scary bark – he hasn’t actually bitten anyone but sometimes that scares people off. We think his reaction to certain people is mostly fear based, maybe a bit of a protection of his person motivation as well. We aren’t sure of his history, but these behaviors likely have a root in some past trauma. You can almost see it behind his eyes as he stares through you. Perhaps in a home, these fear-based reactions would subside and he would be able to relax. Until then, he is enjoys spending lots of time in the kennel manager’s office with those he trusts. If you think you may be able to offer the patience and environment it would take to offer Gunner a home, we think you will be rewarded with a bond like no other if it works out. If you think you may be up for the challenge, please call Open Door’s Kennel Manger, Diane, to discuss Gunner and his needs at 636-671-3643.

meeko

Please don’t tell me you already have a dog – or more than one and are “full up”.  Because I’m truly the doggiest of all dogs!  I bet if you do one of those fancy genetic tests on me – I’ll have a myriad of dog breeds in me.  You’re looking for a shepherd?  a lab?  a hound?  GREAT!  I bet I have some features of all these types in my blood!  Perhaps the best part about me though is that I am 100% POTTY TRAINED!  And the folks here don’t often say that because it’s difficult to assess here.  But they are pretty darn sure about me.  See, I already know how to be a dog.  I had a home for 8 years already. I promise I’ll ease right into any living situation.  I’ve had tons of time to learn to be the perfect dog!  I like to play, and fetch, and walk, and ummmmmm eat……   Maybe that last one a little too much.  I could stand to loose some weight.  Most of us can right and I’m not judging if you’re not!  I probably wouldn’t even mind sharing with another dog (I guess I’d like to meet them first though).  So, if you want, heck, NEED a no-nonsense, REAL DOG in your life – I’m your girl!  I’m Meeko and am available at Open Door Animal Sanctuary, 6065 Duda Road in House Springs, MO.

dr.-pepper

I’m Dr. Pepper and I’m three years old!  I LOVE meeting other dogs and making friends. Even if they don't think we should be friends... I disagree - EVERYONE is my friend!  I look a little goofy- I'm not afraid to admit it. My tail is curled like a slinky and my joints are a little out of whack.  So when I wag my tail, it bounces around like CRAZY. I take an inexpensive pill and supplement every day for my joints and as long as I stay on them, I feel just fine! I love to play with toys.  And when I say love them I really, really love them.  I carry my favorites around with me all the time!   I'm housebroken, and even though I act dopey, I'm pretty clever. I'd really like to book an engagement at your place and make you laugh every single day. And when we've had enough of quirky antics, I can just snuggle up and be your best friend.

jackson-2021

Hello, my name is Jackson. I am a handsome black and tan Coonhound who has a lot of energy. I like children, but no other dogs or cats for me, please. Sometimes, humans can be a little scary but I sure like all the ones here!  I am housebroken and crate trained. I love to go out to the yards to run and play with the tennis balls and other toys that are out there, as well as smelling all the scents too! And, sometimes when I’m out there, I like to howl a bit.  I am a hound after all!  I love being outside so much that I’d love a home with a fenced yard.  It would keep me from following my nose too much too!  Won't you come out and meet me?

Go online to www.odas.org/adopt or call Open Door to make an appointment to meet any of these dogs or any of our other cat or dog residents!  We are open for adoption appointments 7 days a week from 10 AM – 4 PM.
